2019 Men’s South American Championships all set for a historic 16th edition

It was in 1995, when the inaugural edition of Men’s South American Championships were held in Argentina. The tournament was held once every two years thereafter; however, it is being held annually since 2014. Overall, the 2019 edition of the regional tournament will be seeing its 16th edition being held in Peru, who will be hosting the Championships for the 4th time in their history.

Peru will also bear witness to a piece of cricketing history as for the first time ever, the matches between Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Chile will be played with official T20I status and ranking points towards ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings. The tournament will also feature team’s from Colombia and Uruguay; however, with them not being Associate members as of now with ICC, the matches involving either of them will not be counted towards T20I status.

Argentina, the regional heavyweights, have had the most success in the Championships so far, winning 9 titles till date to Mexico and Chile’s 2 each. Caribbean Island Guyana, who have participated in the past editions, have won it twice in 2004 and 2007 respectively. The likes of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Panama and Venezuela have also taken part in earlier editions in the 1990’s and 2000’s; however, the countries now play the Central American Championships instead of South American.

The men’s category matches will be held from Oct 03rd – 06th, 2019 and will be played at El Cortijo Polo Club ground (group stage fixtures), while the Final will be held the Lima Cricket and Football Club. The men’s edition will see all the participants play each other in a single round-robin format group stage, following the conclusion of which, the top 2 team’s in the points table will contest in the final.
