The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have announced the six qualifiers, who will join the host nation England in the eight-team Twenty20 competition at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games from 28th July to 08th August. The direct entrants in the main draw includes Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa, who qualified based on their standings in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as on 01st April 2021.
Barbados will be representing the Caribbean Islands in the tournament as the winners of the West Indies Women’s T20 Blaze competition held in 2019, as the 2020 edition of the event was cancelled due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Women’s teams from Scotland, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kenya and host’s Malaysia will be competing in the qualifiers from January 18th – 24th, 2022. The qualifier will be joining the likes of England Women, New Zealand Women and South Africa Women in Group B of the tournament, while Group A comprises of teams from Australia Women, India Women, Pakistan Women and Barbados Women. The full schedule for the tournament was announced by the CWG organizers, with all the medal games (Final and 3rd/4th play-off) scheduled to take place on 07th August 2022.
All the teams had to go through mandatory quarantine after arrival in Kuala Lumpur, and were able to play warm-up fixtures on 15th and 16th January to get acclimatized to the conditions.
