As is the case with World Cricket League tournaments, the scenario gets interesting and the points table starts to take shape after the conclusion of third round of group matches and in Malaysia, the story is no different with Denmark registering their third consecutive victory to go on top of the table. But, it’s the pile-up behind them that is getting mixed up right now and with the final two rounds of group matches left to be played, all the teams are still in with a shot for the top 2 spots.
Yes, Denmark, even with their three wins are not out of the danger zone yet. Such is the animosity of WCL tournaments. But they will be happy with where they are currently after a close shave against the host’s Malaysia. Weary tracks helped by Malaysian monsoon have made spinners take center-stage at all the three venues with batsmen mostly struggling to get them away.
Malaysia have to re-group very soon to ensure that their two wins in the first two rounds doesn’t go in vain after losing out in a close match against Denmark. All their three matches have been close affairs so far and they would definitely not like to walk the thin line in their remaining two games.
Bermuda brought back Leverock and like he dispatched Jersey in WCL Division 4 in Los Angeles the last time around, again started to in the similar fashion against them and provided Bermuda the impetus they so badly missed in the first two games. Funny how one person installs confidence among his colleagues to lift their games as well as Jersey fumbled badly in their batting innings to lose their second game in the tournament and get in the danger zone. Bermuda, not safe either, are sailing in the similar boat as of now.
Vanuatu are simply giving it away in Malaysia with their batting letting them down for the third time in this tournament. Not even the talismatic Shane Deitz was able to show up some fight this time around against Uganda. Their captain, Andrew Mansale, kept playing the lone-hand in their entire innings for the majority of the time he was out there in the middle but once he left, it was mere formality for the African nation to register their second win in the tournament to spice up things in the points table. Uganda, very much in the running now for the top 2 spots, relied on their spinners and they delivered. Mohammed Irfan has been spectacular in this tournament so far and his uncle, the legendary Shahid Afridi from Pakistan would be proud to see his nephew deliver the goods for Uganda.
