It’s not an comfortable situation, if you are the head coach of a team that shows much promise but doesn’t get to play much and Nepal’s coach Jagat Tamatta is worried quite often than not to ponder what the future holds for Nepal cricket and it’s players.
While Nepal have beaten all odds to surprise everyone in the cricketing circle by promoting themselves to ICC World Cup Qualifiers and go on to secure ODI status for the next four years, Tamatta knows that Nepal were themselves to blame to get relegated to WCL Division 2 in the first place and almost squashing their chances to move from Division 2, if it was not for Karan KC’s miraculous knock against Canada to win the match by 1 wicket in Namibia in Feb 2018.
However, Tamatta is critical about the talent he has in his disposal and with CAN’s suspension few years ago, he has been forced to pick youngsters without any proper domestic exposure. Speaking to Santa Gaha Magar of Nepali Times, Tamatta hopes the situation improves when ICC reinstates CAN again.
Tamatta says “We have a tendency to be overconfident and complacent after every major success. We have many more challenges to overcome. Nepali cricketers are still not experienced enough for international cricket due to the lack of strong opponents in domestic games.”
“If we want good results, there must be more tournaments so there is more choice. I am now mostly selecting the best from among the worst.” Tamatta concludes.
Pretty tough words from the Men’s National team coach and one hopes the situation improves sooner than later for Nepal Cricket to thrive. Nepal are reportedly scheduled to play two ODI’s against Netherlands in Aug 2018 and the currently ongoing Prime Minister’s One-Day Cup could throw out some New faces.
