A Tale of two World T20 qualifiers – Part 3

Not much was in store in terms of pre-tournament favourites losing their way in both the men’s and women’s qualifiers (Africa “B” qualifiers for men’s in Rwanda and Women’s World T20 qualifiers in Netherlands) as most of the teams took giant strides towards qualifying to the next phase.

Kenya maintained their unbeaten streak in the men’s event with Uganda starting to create a gap themselves in terms of points from both Tanzania and Rwanda, while Ireland, Scotland, Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea advanced to the semi-final stages of the tournament.

After the conclusion of the first round of matches in the double round-robin format for the Africa “B” qualifiers, both Kenya and Uganda are not only in front with a points margin over the other two countries, but the net run-rate margin is even higher for them compared to Tanzania and Rwanda. The only way back possible for either of the two teams would be to start winning the remaining games, failing which, it would be very difficult to challenge for the top 2 qualifying spots from the tournament.

A disappointing end to the campaigns of UAE, Netherlands, Thailand and Uganda in the Women’s World T20 qualifiers but now the attention turns to the semis, the winners of which will qualify for Women’s World T20 in West Indies in Nov 2018. The above four countries will now play in the play-off’s to determine the positions from 5th – 8th in the competition.
