Malaysia sneak in as rain denies Singapore to help Nepal win WorldT20 Asia B Qualifiers

Nepal won the ICC World T20 Asia Qualifier “B” trophy as their final group match against Singapore was abandoned due to rain and them edging past their opponents on better net run-rate in Malaysia, after both finished on equal points at the end of the 7-nation tournament (11 points from 6 matches).

The host’s also managed to claim the third and final qualification spot after easing past China in their final group match and edging past Thailand on better net run-rate as well after finishing on equal points (7 points from 6 matches).

Nepal, Singapore and Malaysia thus join The United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait in the Asian regional finals, to be held in 2019. The 6-nation tournament will see the top 2 teams advance to the ICC World T20 global qualifiers. With uniform status provided by ICC for all men’s International matches for all member countries, all matches in the regional finals will carry official T20I status.

Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, picking up 24 wickets in his 6 matches, while Singapore’s Surendran Chandramohan was the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 148 runs from 6 matches at an average of 29.60.

“It has been a well-disciplined, clinical tournament for us with everybody up to the mark irrespective of our opponents. We had to play to our standards and glad that we were able to do that,” said Nepal captain Paras Khadka at the post-match presentation.

Thailand finished on 4th place with 3 wins out of their 6 matches followed by Bhutan, who claimed their 2nd win of the tournament over Myanmar to finish with 4 points from their 6 matches. Myanmar recorded their sole win of the tournament over China, as the latter capped off a highly disappointing display with the bat throughout the competition to remain win-less in their 6 group matches.
