Rwanda to host 4-nation Kwibuka Memorial tournament as defending champs pull out

Rwanda Cricket Association will host the Kwibuka Women T20 tournament from Jun 18th – 23rd, 2019 at Gahanga Cricket Ground in Kigali. Women’s team’s from Rwanda (Rank#30), Uganda (Rank#17), Tanzania (Rank#20) and Mali (unranked) will take part in the T20I approved tournament, which will be played in a double round-robin format, which will see each country play six T20I matches and ranking points on offer for ICC Global Women’s T20I team rankings.

The tournament, which will be hosted for the sixth edition, will not however see the 2018 edition defending champions Kenya Women take part, who were orginially scheduled to take part but have declined the invitation, with Daily Nation publication reporting a board official citing the reason behind the withdrawal. The cricket memorial tournament is aimed at honouring victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, during which over one million people were killed in just a hundred days.

All the participating countries except Mali were part of the recently concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers held in Zimbabwe.
