Northern Queens were crowned the champions of the inaugural Malaysian Super Women League, after they won the final against Eastern Lioness, the match ending on the final delivery of the game, with Adelaide Campion scoring a boundary to seal the win and the title in Queens favor.
Lioness will rue the fact that despite losing only a solitary wicket while batting, where definitely short by 15-20 more runs in the bag, having settled for 135 in their 20 overs. Player of the series, Samantha Arnold, continued her fine form in the tournament with an unbeaten knock of 85 runs and finished with 255 runs in the tournament from 5 innings. However, Queens captain Winifred Duraisingam led with the bat with a crafty innings of 61 runs and shared a match winning partnership of 85 runs with Adelaide Campion, who finished the job and remained unbeaten on 45 runs.
Winifred was adjudged the player of the match for her efforts with both bat and ball. A tad bit harsh on the judgement as Samantha backed up her effort with the bat with 2 wickets to her name as well.
Earlier in the day, the 3rd/4th play-off game between Central Super Girls and Southern Jaguars also proved to be a thriller as the Super Girls won the game by a small margin of only 3 runs. Malaysia’s Mas Elysa Yasmin and Vanuatu’s Valenta Langiatu were the star performers with the bat for their respective teams, both remaining unbeaten on identical 63 runs to their names.
Samantha Arnold though won the best batter of the tournament award, while Queens bowler Manatsawee Jatho (9 wickets in 5 innings) was adjudged the best bowler of the tournament. During the presentation ceremony, Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) president Mahinda Vallipuram stated that the Cricket Board have plans to continue the tournament in the coming years and possibly add few more teams to provide opportunities to other players from Associate member nations as well.
