Afghanistan will host the Netherlands Men’s squad for a 3-match ODI series in Qatar in January 2022. The three ODIs are part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League pathway program, which counts towards qualification for the ICC Men’s CWC 2023 in India. Afghanistan and Netherlands are currently ranked 11th and 12th in the 13-team Super league, and currently in the relegation zone into the World Cup Qualifiers.
The three-match ODI series will begin on January 21st, with the second and third game set to be played on January 23rd and 25th respectively at the Asian Town Cricket Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Afghanistan national squad players have already acquainted themselves with the conditions at the venue, as they held their pre-T20 World Cup preparatory camp in Qatar before travelling to UAE in October 2021.
Afghanistan team, which arrived in Qatar on 03rd January 2022 with an extended 30-member squad, will have practice sessions and friendly matches against Qatar. Both Teams will play 50-overs matches on January 07th and on January 14th, with a 9am (Local Time) start time.
Both Afghanistan and Netherlands have played one completed 3-match series, and both played the series against Ireland. Netherlands were in the middle of their 2nd series against South Africa, out of scheduled eight (8) in the Super League, but the series was postponed after the completion of one game as Netherlands were forced to return back home due to concern over a new COVID-19 variant (Omicron). The detection of the new variant was announced by Health Officials in South Africa and most European countries put an immediate restriction on Air travel from some countries in the African region including South Africa.
