Three (3) members of the Malawi Men’s national squad will be travelling to Zimbabwe to be part of the Elton Chigumbura Cricket Academy in Harare from 28th February – 01st May 2022. Elton Chigumbura, a former captain, and national representative of the Zimbabwean cricket team operates his academy to develop the next generation of cricketers and this is part of the partnership he is hoping to forge with the cricket board for the near future.
National Men’s team vice-captain, Donnex Kansonkho, along with Waliyu Jackson and Blessings Pondani (both youngsters made their debut for Malawi during ICC T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers in Rwanda in October 2021) will train along with other Academy intakes, represent the Academy in local domestic cricket in Harare and also take part in Level 1 Coaching and Umpiring courses run by Zimbabwe Cricket during the tenure of their stay.
Vivek Ganesan, President of Cricket Malawi said “These are exciting times for cricket in Malawi and this partnership with Elton Chigumbura Academy is just one of the many initiatives we will see in 2022 as the sport continues to grow within our borders. The Cricket Malawi board and management are working towards possible affiliations with academies in other powerhouse cricket nations like South Africa, India, Australia, the West Indies and the UK which should better improve not just our playing standards but also aspects of coaching and officiating.”
