The Men’s team of The Cricket Academy Malawi (CAM Dragons) are set to take part in a T20 tournament in Zimbabwe, which is organized by Manicaland Cricket Association, as part of a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) being put in place between the two entities and is expected to be an annual agreement through which Malawi Cricket Academy is looking to provide more exposure and opportunities for domestic players in Malawi (The national squad members and also players coming through the Cricket Academy pathway program). The squad includes a number of Malawi national squad players, who represented the country in ICC qualification pathway events in 2021.
The Cricket Academy Malawi was formed in 2010 as an independent venture to introduce cricket to the townships to ethnic Malawians, and as of 2014, was officially made a full member and of the then Malawi Cricket Union (Rebranded to Cricket Malawi as of 2020) and plays a big part in running coaching programs from grassroots to talent development in Malawi.
The Cricket Academy Malawi Dragons will be competing with Masters Cricket Club, Mutare Sports Club and Westside Cricket Club in the Mutare T20 Big Bash tournament from April 25th – May 02nd, 2022, in which all the teams will play each other in a double round-robin group stage format, following which the top 2 teams in the points table will compete in the Final. The Dragons squad will also comprise of four (4) Zimbabwean players, who have been invited to play for the CAM Dragons.
The Malawi players will be looking forward to this experience, as the national team will be seen in action later this year in the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) T20 Africa Cup in September and 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers towards the end of the year, with South Africa chosen as the tentative host for both the events.
