T20 World Cup Africa sub-regional qualifier to feature 16 nations

International Cricket Council (ICC) have announced the pathway program for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA. As part of the program, the Africa region will have two (2) sub-regional qualifiers, following which the Africa Finals will take place and the top two (2) qualifiers will advance to the main draw of the T20 World Cup.

Both the sub-regional qualifiers are scheduled to take place in December 2022. St Helena Cricket Board had mentioned earlier that South Africa could be the host nation for the event, but ICC have not yet announced the host for both the events. Sub-regional qualifier A will feature Men’s teams representing Botswana, Cameroon, Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho and Malawi, while Sub-regional qualifier B will feature Men’s teams representing Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saint Helena, Seychelles, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

The top two (2) teams from both the sub-regional qualifiers will advance to the Africa Finals, where Uganda will join them, if they fail to qualify for 2022 T20 World Cup from Global qualifier B in Zimbabwe in July 2022.

Some of the teams in the qualifiers will start their preparations from July 2022, when Tanzania host the eight (8)-nation Afro-Gulf T20I cup, which will feature Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda in the line-up. Africa Cricket Association (ACA) have also announced that they will be hosting the inaugural edition of Africa T20 Finals in September 2022 in South Africa, which will feature teams from Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Botswana, Malawi and Mozambique.
