The 2nd day’s action at 2017 Hong Kong Sixes saw the 4 quarter-finals being sued at the start of the day.
In the first quarter-final, Pakistan beat MCC by 17 runs. Pakistan managed to post a formidable 112/2 in their 5 overs with contributions from Sahibzada Farhan (26 off 8), Sohail Tanveer (35 off 8) & Anwar Ali (23 off 7). Gareth Berg & Darren Stevens picked up a wicket apiece.
Pakistan bowlers again came to the fore by restricting MCC to 95/1 in their 5 overs. Darren Stevens (36 off 10), Samit Patel (26 n.o off 10) & Jordan Clark (24 off 9) tried their best but came up short against the Pakistan bowling attack.
In the 2nd quarter-final, Hong Kong reversed their fortunes from the first day as they defeated New Zealand by 17 runs to enter the Cup semis. Hong Kong batted first and put up an impressive 104/3 in their 5 overs with Nizakat Khan (54 n.o off 13) smashed the tournament’s first half-century and got good support from Babar Hayat (33 off 10). Shanan Stewart picked up 2 wickets and produced a run-out in the 4th over but Nizakat scored 29 off the final over to take the team score beyond 100.
The score was always going to daunting for the Kiwis, they only managed to score 87/3 in their 5 overs with Graeme Beghin (35 off 11) scoring the most for the team. However, the other batsmen got out in their 10’s to let off any challenge for the target. Ehsan Nawaz and Ehsan Khan only gave away 28 runs in the last 2 overs to restrict New Zealand to only 87.
In the 3rd quarter-final, Bangladesh came up short against a rejuvenated Australia as they were restricted to only 84/5 in their 5 overs. Only Mahidul Akon managed to score 30 off 8 deliveries to put up some resistance. Hastings picked up a wicket and collected a run-out while Ben Laughlin created 2 run-outs to limit the score for Bangladesh.
Australia took only 4.2 overs to reach 90/1 with Matt Short (31 off 8), Nathan Reardon (31 n.o off 13) & Alex Gregory (17 n.o off 4) finishing up the job for the Aussies.
In the 4th quarter-final, South Africa proved too strong for the Sri Lankan’s as they beat them by 4 wickets. Sri Lanka batter first and posted 95/4 in the 5 overs with Ramith Rambukwella’s innings off 31 n.o off 11 deliveries took the team to the final total. Aubrey Swanepoel picked up 2/13 while Corne Dry & Somila Seyibokwe picked up 1 wickets apiece.
South Africa coasted to 96/2 in 4.4 overs with Jerry Nqolo (34 off 13), Farhan Sayanwala (33 off 7) and Somila Seyibokwe (18 n.o off 4) taking the team to the semis.
