Zimbabwe’s military took control of this southern African country in the early hours Wednesday morning with a televised announcement saying it was “not a military takeover.”
This shocking incident has left many questions unanswered as to the circumstances in the coming weeks or months.
Such a scenario will see Zimbabwe lose the hosting rights for the 2018 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers over Security and Player Safety issues. Zimbabwe were awarded the hosting rights by ICC in October 2017 in their meeting held in Auckland, New Zealand.
The other countries running for the race of hosting the global event were West Indies, UAE and a joint bid by Ireland & Scotland.
If ICC decides to move the WC Qualifiers to a different country, then UAE could be in line to host the event as the weather conditions will have no implications in holding full 50 over matches as opposed to ever-changing weather in Ireland/Scotland and West Indies not in the running whole-heartedly.
No official statements have been issued so far by either Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) or ICC.
