Annual Cup Classic preparations heats up with Trial squad matches announced

The Annual Cup Match Classic is back in Bermuda in 2021 after the gap of last year due to COVID-19 lockdowns as St George’s Cricket Club is all set to host the 2-day game on July 29th and 30th at the Wellington Oval, with HSBC Bermuda being the lead sponsor for the event. Somerset Cricket Club are the defending holders of the Trophy from the 2019 edition.

Both the clubs are going to organize trial matches on 25th July 2021, as the selectors look to finalize the squads ahead of the Cup match. The first Cup Match was played in 1902, but the match has its roots in the latter half of the 19th century. The game was introduced to Bermuda by British soldiers stationed in St. George’s and members of the Royal Navy at Dockyard (For the full history of the Annual Cup match classic, click here).

St George’s Cricket Club have announced that they have got the permission to host 4000 spectators (and not more) on both the days of the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. All the selected players in the trial squads have been playing domestic competitions at home, while Kamau Leverock has been playing his trade in club-level cricket in the UK in the past couple of months.
