The Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) will be hosting the first-ever Twenty20 All-Star Classic at White Hill field on Sep 12th, 2020. The event will showcase the top performers in Bermuda domestic circuit, including the national squad members, which will see will see the players from First and Premier Divisions constitute the BCB President’s and Vice-President’s XI teams.
BCB National Team Selection Committee, led by Dwayne Leverock, selected the squads on the basis of number of games played (six matches for premier division and four matches for first division) by the squad members. The matches at White Hill field will take place at 11am and 3pm local time. However, star player Kamau Leverock will not be taking part in the event, as he is leaving for UK on the same day. Leverock has been in scintillating form in the domestic competitions in 2020 post resumption of the sport due to COVID-19 pandemic and his absence will be felt as a star attraction on the field. Another player set to miss the event due to knee injury is Zeko Burgess.
The First Division President’s team will be captained by Cofield Robinson, of Flatts Victoria, while Joshua Gilbert, of Somerset Bridge, will lead the Vice-President’s XI, while the Premier Division President’ team will be captained by Jordan DeSilva, of Somerset and St George’s Onias Bascome will lead the Vice-President’s team.
Dwayne Leverock has emphasized is his statement to Royal Gazette, that the All-Star games will provide the opportunity to identify players to constitute a natinal “A” squad, which will help in the development of the bench-strength and a pathway to feature for the national squad in International events/tournaments.
Steven Douglas, Chairman of the BCB cricket committee said in his statement to Royal Gazette, “This [All-Star] game is one of the things we wanted to do as a committee, to get more players involved. I always felt that there are a lot of fringe players who would never get an opportunity. But there are a lot of guys from my seat as an umpire who I thought deserved an opportunity to be looked at. This type of game will allow guys to showcase themselves.”
