Canada appoint Monty Desai as head coach ahead of WCL Division 2

Cricket Canada have announced that Monty Desai has been appointed as the Head Coach of the senior men’s squad for the upcoming 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division 2 in Apr 2019 in Namibia.

Desai is currently the head coach for Andhra Cricket Association and has coaching experience with IPL franchise, Rajasthan Royals. He also has the experience of being the batting consultant of Canada earlier and has provided coaching expertise to International team’s such as Afghanistan and Nepal as well in the past.

Canada national squad is currently based in Sri Lanka as part of their preparatory tour to get ready for WCL Division 2, where they will face the likes of Namibia, Hong Kong, Oman, Papua New Guinea and USA for 4 spots available in ICC’s new pathway to 2023 World Cup in CWC League 2. Qualifying for League 2 will also ensure ODI status until 2022 CWC global qualifiers and 36 guaranteed ODI matches until that period.

Cricket Canada President Ranjit Saini said on their website “Monty is a great addition to any team and Cricket Canada will benefit from the rich experience he brings to the table. Monty’s expertise would be the much-needed strategic support to the senior men’s team as Cricket Canada embarks on a hectic schedule this month onwards.”. Mr. Saini went on to say that “I have known Monty for many years and seen him grow as a successful coach. His willingness to support Cricket Canada is much appreciated. This is the best it can get and we are all excited”.
