The Associate opportunity for 2025 and 2029 Men’s Champions Trophy

International Cricket Council (ICC) annouced the revival of the 50-overs Men’s Champions Trophy at their board meeting held on 01st June 2021.

The tournament last played in 2017, will make it’s return back in 2025 and 2029 as part of ICC’s 8-year commercial rights cycle. The Champions Trophy is an event for the top eight ODI teams, and there lies the opportunity of an Associate member country to qualify for it.

The next round of ODI Super League is expected to run for a 3-year period from 2023-2026, where each of the 13 participating nations will play each other in a 3-match ODI series. Considering the point that Netherlands are currently the Associate member part of the ongoing ODI Super League and do not manage to stay in the League for the next cycle, the Associate member who will be part of the next Super League cycle will be in the running for finishing in the top 8 ODI team rankings to qualify for the Champions Trophy.

The last time an Associate nation took part in the Men’s Champions Trophy was back in 2004 when Kenya and United States of America (USA) took part, who also made their debut in the ODI format in the competition.
