Guernsey’s domestic season gets underway with Evening/Weekend league events

Guernsey Cricket Board (GCB) have announced the commencement of the men’s domestic season from 30th Jun 2020, with the Evening and Weekend league to get underway with competitions to be played across T20/50-overs/40-overs formats. After COVID-19 lock-down relaxations were announced by the Guernsey government, the Cricket Board organized trail games on 06th and 20th Jun 2020 with safety protocols in place and were satisfied with the outcome to go ahead with the resumption of the domestic season.

All the domestic tournaments are being sponsored by Odey Wealth (a limited company registered in Guernsey and licensed by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission), with the Evening League T20 competition set to start from 30th Jun onward, with six clubs (Kemp Le Tissier Cobo A, Castle Crests Optimists 1, Canaccord Genuity Griffins A, Wanderers/Rovers, Ravenscroft Independents and Edmundson Irregulars A) set to take part in the event, which will run until 24th Aug.

Evening League 2 and 3 start from 06th Jul onward across KGV, Port Soif and Memorial Fields. While Evening League 1 will be double round-robin group format competition, League 2 and 3 will see the teams contest in a single round-robin format.

The month of Jul 2020 will see the start of the Odey Wealth GCA Cup, which will be played in the 50-overs format, while the Weekend League Bowl event will be played in the 40-overs format. The longer format matches in white-ball cricket will be played only at KGV and College Field grounds on turf wickets. Around 20 matches will be played in Jul/Aug 2020, with the two Weekend Finals featuring the GCA Cup Final will be played on 15th Aug and the Bowl Final on 30th Aug.

“We are just delighted to be playing cricket again and very grateful to Dr Nicola Brink, Heidi Soulsby and Gavin St Pier for steering us to this position early enough to have a meaningful season” said Guernsey Cricket CEO Mark Latter. He continued, “ Whilst it will be a busy one there are a number of players still on island who might not have been around ordinarily which makes the squads look strong and I am sure appetite to play now is stronger than ever”.
