After a frantic week in Windhoek, Namibia, the final ever edition of a WCL (World Cricket League) tournament (Division 2) concluded with host’s Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea and USA advancing in the newly formed ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tournament, where they join Scotland, Nepal and UAE to form the 7-nation tournament, which will run from 2019-2021, during which each Associate member will play 36 ODI matches to claim one of the top 4 spots, that will qualify them directly for 2022 ICC World Cup Qualifiers.
The three lowest-placed Associate Members in the 2019-2021 ICC CWC League 2 would have to contest the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge play-off qualifiers in 2019 along with the winners of ICC CWC Challenge Leagues A & B. Hence, at the conclusion of WCL Division 2, Hong Kong and Canada have been relegated to Challenge Leagues A & B, where they will compete with Associate countries ranked from 23-32 in the next 2 years of competition, where they will play 15 List-A matches each against their 5 opponents in either groups.
Netherlands won’t be part of the CWC League 2 or Challenge League competitions as they have already qualified for the 13-Team ICC CWC Super League from 2020-2022 by winning the previous 2015-2017 cycle of WCL Championship.
As announced earlier, the CWC League 2 structure will be in the form of ODI Tri-series involving three nations from the 7-nations and therefore, a total set of 21 Tri-series will be played out from 2019-2021.
