In yet another high profile signing to brighten their prospects in the upcoming ICC WCL Division 2 at home in Apr 2019, Cricket Namibia (CN) have recruited recently retired Proteas player Albie Morkel in their coaching team as a specialist consultant for the men’s squad for the 2019 season.
Albie Morkel has had a distinguished International and domestic career for South Africa and is one of the finest all-rounders of the 2000 era, having played in various T20 franchise leagues around the globe as well. Albie has represented four franchises in the Indian Premier League and also played for three counties in the English domestic season.
Back in South Africa, he has been a long-serving member of The Titans franchise in the domestic circuit and recently captained Durban Heat in the inaugural edition of Mzansi Super League in Nov/Dec 2018.
Earlier towards the end of 2018, South Africa’s Pierre de Bruyn was appointed as the Head Coach for Namibia’s men’s National squad, effective from 01st Jan 2019.
Pierre has playing experience in South Africa’s domestic tournaments before becoming a full-time coach at the end of his playing career in 2010. Pierre joined English County Club Leicestershire at the start of 2016 season as the assistant coach of the 2nd XI squad before getting promoted to Head Coach position for the senior side. He left the role in 2017.
Pierre has previous experience in the Namibian set-up, having being an consultant to Namibia’s U19 squad in 2016. One of his high points was to see Namibia U19 beat South Africa U19 in the 2016 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh.
Namibia enter the 2019 season with crucial tournaments like ICC World Cricket League Division 2 at home and ICC 2020 Men’s T20 World Cup Africa regional finals in Uganda. Namibia will also host ICC 2020 U19 World Cup Africa Division 1 tournament at home.
