In yet another high profile signing to brighten their prospects in the upcoming 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Oman and UAE from 17th October 2021, Cricket Namibia (CN) have appointed South Africa domestic franchise Multiply Titans High-Performance coach Richard Das Neves as assistant coach to Pierre de Bruyn and Albie Morkel for the tournament.
Albie Morkel, who joined the Namibian set-up in 2019, has had a distinguished International and domestic career for South Africa and is one of the finest all-rounders of the 2000 era, having played in various T20 franchise leagues around the globe as well. Albie has also represented four franchises in the Indian Premier League and also played for three counties in the English domestic season. Back in South Africa, he has been a long-serving member of The Titans franchise in the domestic circuit, and the club and Namibia Cricket Board have engaged to form a close relationship in the past couple of years, which saw their senior squad tour Namibia in August 2021 for their pre-season camp.
Earlier towards the end of 2018, South Africa’s Pierre de Bruyn was appointed as the Head Coach for Namibia’s men’s National squad, effective from 01st Jan 2019. Pierre also has playing experience in South Africa’s domestic tournaments before becoming a full-time coach at the end of his playing career in 2010. Pierre joined English County Club Leicestershire at the start of 2016 season as the assistant coach of the 2nd XI squad before getting promoted to Head Coach position for the senior side. He left the role in 2017. Pierre has previous experience in the Namibian set-up, having being an consultant to Namibia’s U19 squad in 2016. One of his high points was to see Namibia U19 beat South Africa U19 in the 2016 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh.
Namibia enter the T20 World Cup on the back of very impressive season in 2021 so far, which saw the senior squad win multiple series in both 50-overs and T20 formats against Uganda, South Africa and Zimbabwe Emerging squads, Multiply Titans and ITEC Knights (Free State).
