Papua New Guinea appoint new Australian coach before heading to UAE

Papua New Guinea will be departing for UAE shortly for one of their most important cricket tours till date with a chance to both qualify for their maiden ODI World Cup Qualifiers and also take a shot at finishing at the top of the points table following the conclusion of the final round of WCL Championship matches and qualify as the 13th team in the newly put forward ICC ODI League from 2019-2021.

Following Jason Gillespie’s departure after a short 3-month stint as the head coach, Australia Women’s assistant coach Joe Dawes has been appointed to take over the reins as PNG’s consultant coach and will be travelling with the team to UAE. Dawes has worked with Indian men’s national team as well in the past as their bowling coach.

PNG captain Assad Vala said that the players were familiar with Dawes, a former first class cricketer in Australia.

PNG play 2 ODI’s against Scotland followed by the I-Cup & WCL matches against Hong Kong.
