Papua New Guinea and host’s Samoa reigned supreme in the cricket discipline at the 2019 Pacific Games, as PNG’s men’s team claimed the Gold medal after defeating Vanuatu in the final, while Samoa won the women’s Gold after defeating PNG in the final.
Vanuatu’s men’s team and PNG’s women’s team took home the Silver medal, while Samoa captured the Bronze after defeating New Caledonia in the 3rd/4th play-off in the men’s category, while Vanuatu took the Bronze in women’s category after defeating Fiji in the 3rd/4th play-off match. All matches involving PNG, Vanuatu and Samoa in the men’s and PNG, Vanuatu, Samoa and Fiji in the women’s categories were official T20I matches.
Samoa women (World #18) had a wonderful campaign in the tournament, defeating PNG women (World #15) twice in the process (including the all-important Gold medal match), and will make some crucial ranking points. It will be a morale booster for Women’s cricket in Samoa, as PNG are one of the participants in the Global Qualifiers for 2020 T20 Women’s World Cup.
PNG’s men’s squad will be in action in Oct/Nov 2019, when they participate in the Global Qualifiers for 2020 T20 Men’s World Cup.
