Cricket PNG (Papua New Guinea) have announced their 15-member Women’s national squad (Lewas) for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe from November 23rd – December 05th, 2021.
The Lewas squad will be competing against teams from the West Indies, Netherlands, Ireland, and Sri Lanka in the group phase of the World Cup Qualifiers, seeking to qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 in New Zealand. The top three (3) teams in the World Cup Qualifiers advance to the 2022 tournament main draw, while a top five (5) finish will ensure qualification in the next cycle of Women’s ODI Championship, which is the qualification pathway program towards Women’s World Cup events.
Head Coach Kath Hempenstall, who was appointed recently and will join up with the squad in Zimbabwe, is excited at the mix of youth and experience in the team and said in the press release “We feel this will be a strong team and we can’t wait to get to Zimbabwe and to get into playing international cricket again. The Kumul Petroleum PNG Lewas haven’t played internationally for two years, and we can’t wait to test ourselves against tough competition.”
The players have been playing the Isuzu One-Day domestic competition matches at home for the past couple of weeks, preparing themselves for the upcoming assignment.
