Sierra Leone Cricket Association (SLCA) have announced a 18-member Women’s provisional squad ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa regional qualifiers in Botswana in September 2021. SLCA have also updated that South Africa could be the alternate venue for the qualifiers if the tournament is moved out of Botswana due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
SLCA CEO Francis Trevor Samura said that the final squad of 14 will be announced in due course of time, with the remaining 4 players acting as reserves in case of injuries or other replacement scenarios. The selected players were the standout performers during the Inter-squad national trial matches held at Kingtom oval in Freetown in May 2021 and also the Women’s T20 series held during January – March 2021.
Sierra Leone Women will be competing in the Africa regional qualifiers along with teams from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Botswana, Uganda, Cameroon, Malawi and Mozambique. All the matches will carry ranking points towards ICC Women’s T20I team rankings table. Sierra Leone Women’s previous International assignment was during the Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers held in Zimbabwe in May 2019.
