Schedule announced for Americas qualifiers for 2022 T20 World Cup in Antigua

Owing to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, Antigua has been awarded the hosting rights for the Americas region qualification pathway tournament, replacing originally announced host Canada, towards 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, which will take place from November 3rd – 15th, 2021.

Canada, Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Panama and USA will be competing in the 8-nation tournament, from which the top two teams will progress into the two eight-team global qualifiers. Unlike the previous edition of the Americas qualifiers, where two sub-regional tournaments were followed by the regional finals, the 2021 edition will be a one top tier regional qualifier affair, and it gives the lesser-ranked Associate members of the region to play against the regional heavyweights like Canada, USA and Bermuda.

The tournament was scheduled to take place from 18th – 24th August 2020; However, in June 2020, the tournament was postponed until 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic across the globe. The tournament will mark the return of Bahamas in the Americas region qualifiers, after their previous appearances in 2012 and 2013 editions of the sub-regional events and have appointed former Afghanistan head coach Andy Moles for the campaign and training sessions have started. The remaining team’s are the same ones who participated in the 2018/2019 events, from which Canada and Bermuda qualified for the global qualifiers for 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.

Panama will be travelling to Colombia to play against the host’s and a representative club side from Sri Lanka in October 2021 to prepare for their campaign in the regional qualifiers, While Bahamas squad has been training at home for the past couple of months under the guidance of their new head coach Andy Moles.
