The tournament that started couple of years back with the regional qualifiers has had it’s share of postponements due to the ongoing Pandemic globally, but the ACA have now finalized the dates for the tournament to take place at Willowmoore Park Cricket Stadium and adjacent grounds in Guateng, Benoni. The top 3 teams qualifying from the regional tournaments (Western and Southern) joined Kenya and Uganda (Eastern) in the 8-nation tournament, with Group A featuring teams from Uganda, Botswana, Ghana and Mozambique, and Group B comprising of teams from Kenya, Tanzania (replaced Nigeria), Cameroon and Malawi.

The tournament group stage will be played in a single round-robin format, following which, the top two (2) team from each group will contest in the knock-out stages of the inaugural edition of ACA Africa T20 Cup. Sumod Damodar, ACA President, also expressed his thoughts on the future of other tournaments being organized by ACA, and was confident that upon the completion of the Africa T20 Cup tournament, other competitions at the Women’s and age-group levels would also be introduced in the near future, that will feature age-group and Women’s events in the Afro-Asia agreement being in place now between ACA and Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

The tournament is happening at a crucial time for all the countries in the competition except Uganda, as the ICC Africa sub-regional qualifiers are scheduled to take place in October/November in Rwanda and getting International matches to prepare for the qualifiers is something that most of the countries participating in this competition miss out on.

Group A in the tournament will comprise of Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi, while Group B consist’s of Kenya, Botswana, Cameroon and Mozambique. The tournament group stage will be played in a single round-robin format, following which, the top 2 team’s from each group will advance to the semifinals.

Uganda, one of the title favourites, have already began their preparations for the event, with tours of Qatar and India in Feb 2020. Ghana, who qualified for the tournament from the regional qualifiers held in Nigeria in 2018, will look forward to put in strong challenge for the title contenders, as they also prepare for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa sub-regional qualifiers, later in 2020.

All matches will be played with official T20I status and ranking points towards ICC Men’s T20I team rankings.

Host’s Kenya will be joined by Uganda (Eastern region) and top 3 teams qualifying from the regional tournaments (Western and Southern). Group A will comprise of Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi, while Group B consist’s of Kenya, Botswana, Cameroon and Mozambique. The tournament group stage will be played in a single round-robin format, following which, the top 2 team’s from each group will advance to the semifinals.

The venues for the tournament will be updated by Cricket Kenya in due course of time. The tournament comes at a crucial point as the African sub-regional qualifiers for 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will also commence in 2020. Kenya and Nigeria were part of the global qualifiers for 2020 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in UAE in Oct/Nov 2019.

The tournament will begin right after the conclusion of the ICC World T20 Africa “C” qualifiers from Oct 28th – Nov 04th, 2018 at the same venue. However, unlike the ICC qualifiers being a 7-nation event, the ACA southern qualifiers will be a 4-nation affair with host’s Botswana competing against Malawi, Mozambique & St Helena for two qualification spots into the main draw of T20 Africa Cup, to be hosted in 2019 tentatively in Nairobi, Kenya (announced provisionally).

2 qualifiers each from three regional qualifiers will form the eventual 6-nation T20 Africa Cup tournament in 2019 in which all the matches will be eligible to be played with T20I status. Nigeria and Ghana have already qualified from their regional qualifiers, which was held right after the conclusion of World T20 Africa “A” qualifiers in Lagos, Nigeria earlier this year.

This was Ghana’s second victory over the host’s and Nigeria will be looking forward to return the favour in the Northwestern qualifiers for T20 Africa Cup, set to start shortly with Mali and Cameroon also joining the four teams from the ICC qualifiers.

Captain Isaac Aboagye won the toss and Ghana bowlers did the rest of the work as they bowled out Nigeria for only 73 runs in 19.3 overs with Koffi Bagabena picking up 4/22 runs and got good support from Micheal Aboagye, who picked up 2/4 runs of his 4 overs, which included 2 maidens as well.

Ghana didn’t have much of troubles as they reached the target with more than 5 overs to spare to claim the trophy. Nigeria, too have already qualified for Africa Regional finals.

The other two teams in the tournament, Sierra Leone and The Gambia will now try to better their performances in the T20 Africa Cup qualifiers and show much more resolve against both Ghana and Nigeria.

Sierra Leone ended their campaign with a second win over The Gambia. ICC development team will be very happy with how Lagos has organised the tournament in the past one week and will be looking forward to seeing Botswana and Rwanda hosting the Africa “B” and “C” group qualifiers, later in the year.

Simon Ateak of Ghana was awarded the Man of the Series award while Nigeria Captain Chimizie Onwuzulike was adjudged the Batsman of the tournament and Mohammed Taiwo won the bowler of the tournament award.

19 countries will take part in three regional qualifying tournaments for 6 places in the Final tournament for ACA T20 Africa Cup Title.

Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) will be hosting the Northwest region qualifiers at Lagos from Apr 24th – 30th, 2018. ACA T20 Africa Cup will be played in accordance with ICC Men’s T20 International Playing Conditions Effective 28th Sep 2017.

Host’s Nigeria will once again play against Ghana, Gambia and Sierra Leone from the ICC Africa sub-regionals Qualifiers for WorldT20 from Apr 14th – 22nd, 2018 at Lagos. Mali and Cameroon also join the four countries mentioned above for the 6-nation ACA T20 Africa Cup Qualifiers.

President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Professor Adam Yahaya Ukwenya said “It is unprecedented in our cricket history for Nigeria to be given hosting rights for two back-to-back qualifying tournaments ICC T20 (April 14-22) and African Cricket Association T20 (April 24-30). Its a measure of confidence on the new board of NCF and Nigeria.”
