The tournament format changes from the previous format of having two (2) sub-regional qualifiers in the EAP region. PNG, Japan and Samoa competed in the previous Asia-EAP Qualifier held in Oman in 2025. Group 1 will feature teams from Japan, Fiji and Vanuatu, while Group 2 will feature teams from Samoa, Philippines and Indonesia. The final group will consist of teams from Papua New Guinea, South Korea and Cook Islands. The top two (3) teams from each group in the points table at the end of the single round-robin group stage format will advance to the Super Six stage.

Total qualification spots from the EAP Qualifier has not yet been confirmed by ICC and will be announced in due course of time (Discussions ongoing related to this matter). The three (3) teams that are eliminated in the group stage will play matches against each other in each of the Super Six match-days, hence, ensuring that each team get to play enough fixtures before they depart Japan, as available of fixtures for the remainder of the year may not be much for some of these teams.

The PICC23 vision is ‘Pacific CommUNITY through Cricket’. ADF Cricket developed PICC23 to reinforce the benefits of cricket as a community sport in the South West Pacific and maximize Pacific Step-Up ‘people-to-people connections’ across multiple Pacific nations. Originally created by ADF Cricket, PICC23 development occurred in collaboration with the International Cricket Council East Asia Pacific (ICC EAP), Cricket Australia and Cricket Fiji. PICC23 has two discrete parts: the PICC23 Skills Development Program (SDP) that aims to increase local community capacity, and the PICC23 T20 cricket tournament that creates a high-profile marque event.

Leveraging existing ICC EAP and CA community cricket programs, ADF Cricket will also coordinate a skills development program from March 05th – 09th, that draws up to 70 participants from Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Cook Islands. The program promotes health and fitness techniques, leadership, cricket coaching, umpiring and scoring accreditation, as well as a Suva-based community and school program based on Cricket Australia’s ‘Cricket Blast’ children’s program.

With the absence of Cricket as a medal category in the 2023 Pacific Games in Solomon Islands, this initiative from Australian Defence Force Cricket will bring much needed regional competition apart from ICC qualification events, which has taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic years. With PacificAus Sports also collaboration with Cricket Boards in the region, Papua New Guinea Women’s team members have got playing opportunities with clubs based in Australia, while the National squad also competed in the 2023 Australian Country Cricket Championships in Canberra. Samoa Cricket Development Coordinator Perelini Mulitalo has also mentioned in a press interview that the next edition of the Pacific Island Cricket Challenge will be taking place next year in New Zealand.

Samoa were given the hosting rights for the 2019 Pacific Games in Dec 2017 as a replacement for Tonga, who withdrew from hosting the games due to financial concerns. PGC and the Tonga Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee have filed for a civil suit, seeking damages from the Tonga Government for the withdrawal of the games.

However, the total number of sports is getting reduced from total 28 disciplines from the 2015 Pacific Games to 26 in the 2019 edition. And it further will be trimmed to a maximum of 24 sports disciplines for the 2023 edition of the games, to be held in Solomon Islands, to make the hosting of the games more sustainable for hosts.

The 2019 edition of the games in Samoa will be special for Cricket, as both the men’s and women’s categories will be contested as T20I games between the ICC Associate members in the region. It would be interesting to see if Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket would also send their representative teams to take part in the games as T20I team ranking points will be on offer.

Cricket was part of the 28 disciplines in the 2015 edition of the games held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in which Vanuatu won the Gold medal in the Men’s category and Samoa won the Gold medal in the Women’s category. Six countries participated in the Women’s category while four countries took part in the Men’s category.

Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa are due to take part in the ICC World T20 East Asia-Pacific Group “A” Qualifiers to be held in Fiji in Aug 2018, for which the schedule has been announced by ICC.
