Ghana and Nigeria continued from where they had left off in the ICC WorldT20 Africa A Qualifiers as they both

Ghana and Nigeria continued from where they had left off in the ICC WorldT20 Africa A Qualifiers as they both qualified from Northwestern Qualifiers into T20 Africa Cup, organised by Africa Cricket Association.

Ghana again proved too strong for Nigeria in the final as they defeated them by 7 wickets to lift the trophy. Batting first, Nigeria could manage to post only 109/8 in their 20 overs, which Ghana surpassed in the 16th over, losing only three wickets in the process.

Nigeria hosted the 5-nation Northwestern qualifiers for ACA T20 Africa Cup from 23rd – 29th Apr, 2018 with Ghana, The Gambia and Sierra Leone continuing from the ICC Africa A qualifiers and Cameroon joining them as the fifth country in the event. Mali were also supposed to join for the tournament but backed out of it at the last moment after ACA had announced their squad on their twitter handle earlier this month.

Ghana played Sierra Leone in the semi-finals after topping the group league stage by winning all their four fixtures while Nigeria played The Gambia in the 2nd semi-final after finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively in the points table.

Kenya will be hosting the East Africa qualifiers for T20 Africa Cup in Jul 2018 with Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Seychelles joining the host’s, from which the top 2 teams will be advancing to T20 Africa Cup. Similarly, Botswana will be hosting the Southern Africa qualifiers in Nov 2018 with Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, St. Helena, Lesotho, Malawi and Swaziland joining the host’s to compete for top 2 qualification spots in T20 Africa Cup.

Kenya will host the T20 Africa Cup tournament in mid-2019 in Nairobi with top 2 teams from all three qualifiers competing for the trophy in what will be the biggest tournament for non-full members of ICC from the African region.

A lot of work needed in the Africa Cricket website which has not updated any of the scores for the qualifiers held in Lagos and no updates about Mali’s non-participation in the event and the reason for their withdrawal from the tournament.

Ghana continued their supremacy over Nigeria, after defeating them by 4 wickets to win the ICC World T20 Africa ‘A’ Qualifier in Lagos. This was Ghana’s second victory over the host’s and Nigeria will be looking forward to return the favour in the Northwestern qualifiers for T20 Africa Cup, set to start shortly with Mali and Cameroon also joining the four teams from the ICC qualifiers.

Captain Isaac Aboagye won the toss and Ghana bowlers did the rest of the work as they bowled out Nigeria for only 73 runs in 19.3 overs with Koffi Bagabena picking up 4/22 runs and got good support from Micheal Aboagye, who picked up 2/4 runs of his 4 overs, which included 2 maidens as well.

Ghana didn’t have much of troubles as they reached the target with more than 5 overs to spare to claim the trophy. Nigeria, too have already qualified for Africa Regional finals.

The other two teams in the tournament, Sierra Leone and The Gambia will now try to better their performances in the T20 Africa Cup qualifiers and show much more resolve against both Ghana and Nigeria.

Host’s Nigeria and Ghana have qualified from ICC Africa “A” qualifiers into the regional Finals. After rain washed out the opening day match between Ghana and Sierra Leone, any further chance Sierra Leone had of qualifying washed away with Nigeria posting a big win over The Gambia to secure their promotion.

Ghana and Nigeria will now meet in the final round of matches in a winner takes all battle for the title. Ghana have 9 points in the bag while Nigeria trail by only 1 point behind them. Sierra Leone and The Gambia will also face each other to finish the tournament on a high and carry the momentum into the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) T20 Africa Cup Northwestern Qualifiers, starting next week in Lagos.

Nigeria secured qualification into Africa regional Finals with win against The Gambia – Image by CCCLeagueUpdate @CCCLeague (Twitter)

If the first match between Nigeria and Ghana is anything to go by, the next one promises to be a thrilling encounter as well as the virtual finale of the tournament. While both the teams will be upbeat after securing promotion to regional finals, the respective camps will be looking to claim the bragging rights after Ghana coach commented before the start of the tournament that their team is the better one when compared between the two.

For Nigeria, this will be to show that they are once again ready to take the battle to the top Associate countries in the African region. A strong finish in the tournament will also help them prepare well for the T20 Africa Cup Qualifiers.

Nigeria secured qualification into Africa regional Finals with win against The Gambia – Image by CCCLeagueUpdate @CCCLeague (Twitter)

Chimezie Onwuzulike (Nigeria) leads the run-scorer’s for the tournament so far with 234 runs from 5 matches including his 90 n.o from the match against The Gambia today. Simon Ateak (Ghana) with 136 runs from 4 matches and Rexford Bakum (Ghana) with 135 runs from 4 matches occupy the 2nd & 3rd spot in the list.

In bowlers, five players lead the wicket-taking charts with the same number of 7 wickets and the list includes Mohameed Taiwo (Nigeria), Syvester Okpe (Nigeria), Abu Kamara (Sierra Leone), Isaac Aboagye (Ghana) and Andre Jarju (The Gambia).

Ghana made heavy weather of a low chase but prevailed in the end to register their 3rd consecutive win in the ICC Africa A Qualifiers to go on top of points table.

Ghana defeated host’s Nigeria by 7 wickets while Sierra Leone notched up their maiden win in the tournament aa they got past The Gambia by 8 wickets in the opening match of the day.

Ghana now has 6 points from their 3 matches while Nigeria stay in the 2nd place with 4 points but better net run-rate compared to all the other teams. With the next round of matches starting from 18th Apr, it is crunch time for both Sierra Leone and The Gambia, if they have to mount any challenge for top spots for qualifying into the regional finals.

With top 2 team’s advancing from Africa A group, Ghana and Nigeria are looking comfortable to claim those spots if the other two teams don’t start winning their matches anytime soon.

Brief Scores:

The Gambia 87 all out in 18.3 overs (Mbye Dumbuya 20, Abu Kamara 3/17, Ibrahim Kamara 2/16, Edward Ngegba 1/8, Hari Ram Bhamu 1/18) Lost to Sierra Leone 89/2 in 12.5 overs (Abu Kamara 26 n.o, Ibrahim Mansaray 25, Yegbeh Jalloh 20 n.o, Andre Jarju 1/16) by 8 wickets

Nigeria 119/8 in 20 overs (Dotun Olatunji 46, Chimezie Onwuzulike 33, David Ankrah 3/14, Isaac Aboagye 1/17, Vincent Ateak 1/24) Lost to Ghana 120/3 in 19.5 overs (Simon Ateak 50 n.o, James Vifah 32, Isaac Okpe 1/17, Mohameed Taiwo 1/15) by 7 wickets

Host’s Nigeria and Ghana posted comprehensive victories over Sierra Leone and Gambia in day 1 of action from Lagos in the Africa A group sub-regional qualifiers for ICC WorldT20. While Nigeria won against Sierra Leone by 88 runs in the first match of the day, Ghana registered a 58 runs victory margin against Gambia in the second match of the day.

Teams warming up before action begins on Day 1 of ICC Africa A Group sub-regional Qualifiers for WorldT20 at Lagos – Image by CricNg @cricng_ (Twitter)

Nigeria captain Chimezie Onwuzulike won the man-of-the-match award for his match-winning knock of 54 runs from 36 deliveries and his partnership with Oladotun Olatunji (49 off 35) of 87 runs for the 4th wicket set the tone for their innings as Nigeria posted 165/6 in their 20 overs. Abu Kamara (2/23) and Solomon Williams (2/15) bowled well for Sierra Leone.

Nigerian bowlers were on top of their game from the get go as they kept picking wickets at regular intervals to bowl out Sierra Leone for only 77 runs in the 19th over. A tough outing for their batsmen as only three players managed to go past 10 runs. Mohameed Taiwo (3/14), Syvester Okpe (2/6) and Chimezie Onwuzulike (2/10) did not let anyone in the middle and late order to settle down after the three starting bowlers for Nigeria picked up a wicket apiece in the first 7 overs.

Team captains of Ghana and Gambia with the ICC Match official at the toss – Image by CricNG @cricng_ (Twitter)

Ghana were far more comfortable during their batting innings as they posted 173/4 in their 20 overs against Gambia. Rexford Bakum (44 off 33) gave the good start to the innings as Julius Mensah (37 n.o off 25) and David Ankrah (34 n.o off 22) provided the late flourish as they posted an unbeaten partnership of 64 runs for the 5th wicket in 34 deliveries. Andre Jarju manage to pick up couple of wickets for Gambia in an otherwise lacklustre performance from the bowling unit.

Gambia batting innings started on a disastrous note as they lost three players in their top 4 without scoring, leaving them at 3/3 in the 2nd over of the innings itself. Very tough for any International side to make a turnaround from that position and the rest of the batting line-up struggled to keep pace with the increasing asking rate. P Faye (55 off 46) played a sparkling knock amongst the falling wickets around him but after he got out in the 16th over, Gambia only managed to get to 115/8 in their 20 overs.

David Pereira (2/16), Isaac Aboagye (2/21) and David Ankrah (1/18) capped of a disciplined bowling performance by the Ghanian team. Both Nigeria and Ghana have started on a strong note with good boost to their net run-rate’s as well with the big victory margins. All set for action from day 2 of the qualifiers now from Lagos.
