Thailand Women were crowned champions in the WWT20 Asia Qualifiers as they defeated UAE Women in the final by 22 runs.
Both teams, however, have already qualified for the Global Qualifiers event to be held in Netherlands in mid-2018. UAE’s Nisha Ali was the player of the tournament with 90 runs and 12 wickets to her name.
Thailand women got bowled out for a meagre 78 runs in 19.2 overs. Nattaya Boochatham (26 off 45) and Nannapat Khoncharoenkai (18 off 20) provided the only notable partnership of 30 runs for the 4th wicket. Nisha Ali bagged a 5-fer as he collected 5/7 in 3.2 overs including a hat-trick. Kavisha Egodage (2/18) & Shubha Venkataraman (1/14) provided good support to Nisha in the middle overs.
The chase was not a tall order by any means but Thailand women quickly reduced UAE to 24/5 in the 12th over. Their bowlers were upto the mark with Chanida Sutthiruang (2/14 off 4), Ratanaporn Padunglerd (1/4 off 3), Sornnarin Tippoch (1/11 off 4), Nattaya Boochatham (2/10 off 4) and Wongpaka Liengprasert (1/8 off 3) running through the UAE batting line-up to restrict them to only 56/9 in their 20 overs.
Roopa Nagraj (27 off 53) provided the only resistance from the UAE women’s team.
Both teams will now have sometime before they head to Netherlands for the Global Qualifiers in Jun 2018. Earlier, Nepal Women secured 3rd spot in the competition by defeating Hong Kong Women in the 3rd place play-off.
