Uganda announce squad for Zimbabwe’s Women’s T20 Challenge

Uganda selectors have announced the 14-member Women’s National squad, which will take part in the Women’s T20 Challenge, to be played in Zimbabwe from Apr 29th – May 4th, 2018.

Uganda, Tanzania, host’s Zimbabwe and Namibia will compete in the Challenge tournament, which originally included Kenya as all the countries were part of ICC Africa Women’s World Twenty20 qualifier in Windhoek, Namibia last year. Uganda Women’s team won the tournament and qualified for Global Qualifiers in Netherlands from Jul 3rd – 14th, 2018.

Uganda Women’s Squad for Zimbabwe T20 Challenge:

Kevin Awino (Captain), Janet Mbabazi, Getrude Chandiru, Rachael Ntono, Consy Aweko, Carol Namugenyi, Franklyn Najjumba, Saidat Kemigisha, Mary Nalule, Rita Musamali, Stephanie Nampiina, Immaculate Nakisuyi, Joycemary Apio & Prico Nakitende

After the recent resignations of the officials in the Cricket Board following relegation to WCL Division 3 after poor performances in WCL Division 2 in Namibia and upheaval in the governance of cricket in Kenya after the Board was dissolved, Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa appointed an interim management committee to run cricket in Kenya, which have so far confirmed appointments of National men’s head coach in Maurice Odumbe and his assistant coach.

However, Women’s cricket team misses out on this tournament as it wasn’t accounted for in the current budget of Cricket Kenya. But the Interim Committee is looking at ways to somehow get the team on the park in a last-minute attempt. Africa Cricket Association had conveyed the tournament details much in advance but it wasn’t responded to due to the sudden turmoil in the administration.

The tournament will be a big boost to Uganda Women’s team, as it will provide them with competitive match practice before they travel to Netherlands for the Global Qualifiers. Tanzania recently had a successful stint in the ASEAN Women’s T20 Cup tournament in Thailand and will look to continue their growth curve in this event as well.
