Men’s Elite League marks resumption of domestic cricket in Uganda

Uganda Cricket have announced the launch of Men’s Elite League competition as the resumption of sports was allowed as per the presidential directive on 20th September 2020 and have got the approval from National Council of Sports, to whom the Cricket Board submitted their final draft of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and also the planned activities list.

The Men’s Elite League, which will take place from October 25th – 31st in the T20 format, will be a 3-team competition, with the Aziz Damani Scorpions, Metro Challengers Mambas and Bucks announced as the franchise team’s unveiled at the launch of the tournament and squads on 17th October 2020. All the three teams will play each other in four games each during the group stage of the competition, before the top 2 team’s face each other in the Final of the competition.

Lawrence Mahatlane, former Cricket South Africa U-19 coach and the current Head Coach for Men’s national squad, will get the opportunity to assess the players for the first time since his appointment on a three-year term was signed three months back. Mahatlane has stressed on the fact that he will be looking to groom youngsters into taking up leading roles in the senior national squad as one of his top priorities during his coaching tenure.

The tournament is going to give our top players some game time considering we have not hard cricket most of this year. The future for this elite league is to grow it into our very own IPL, with auction for players and involving some international players as well. So we hope to grow this tournament into something big – Cricket Uganda
