After the successful staging of the men’s Elite league competition in October 2020, Uganda Cricket Association (UGA) are all ready to organize the women’s Elite league competition in December 2020. The competition will be played in the T20 format and all the five games will be played at the Lugogo Oval.
The two franchise teams in the competition, Aziz Damani Hurricanes and Challengers Blizzards, have a squad of 15 players each, and will be staying at a residential camp at Kololo SS students hostel. The tournament will provide exposure and game-time in the middle to young talent along with the seasoned campaigners ahead of a busy 2021 International season, that includes the Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifiers.
Uganda Cricket Association emphasized on the same points while speaking to Czarsportz “The purpose of the league is to prepare the ladies for upcoming engagements in 2021. The teams have a mix of youngsters and the proven stars so it should be interesting.”
Uganda Women have been in the mix along with Zimbabwe Women and Namibia Women in the African region, apart from the regional heavyweights, South Africa. Uganda were able to edge past Zimbabwe during the 2017 Africa region qualifiers, when they qualified for the 2018 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers held in Netherlands, while they lost the opportunity in the 2019 edition of the Africa qualifiers as they finished second to Namibia during the group stages and failed to advance.
