Netherlands series against West Indies will be crucial in ODI Super League Championship

International Cricket Council (ICC) had announced the formulation of 13-nation ODI League between 2020-2022, which is acting as the direct qualification pathway for 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, many proposed matches in 2020 were postponed and will now be compensated in 2021 and 2022. So far, Netherlands have played two (2) series in the Championship, when they hosted Ireland at home and toured Qatar to play against Afghanistan. Now, the board have confirmed the dates for matches to be hosted in home against the visiting team from the West Indies in the months of May/June 2022 at the VRA ground in Amstelveen, which is also the venue when England tour the country for their series of ODI Super League later in the month of June as well.

The bottom 5 countries in the overall 13-team points standings will compete in the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier along with other Associate members qualifying from the World Cricket League Championship and ICC WCL Division 2. All 13 teams thus, will play a total of 24 ODI matches to qualify directly by finishing in the Top 7 in the points table at the end of the ODI League cycle.

The previous meeting between the two countries was during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Global qualifiers held in Zimbabwe. The last time a team from the Caribbean visited the Dutch shores for a bi-lateral series was way back in 1991, and featured the likes of Curtly Ambrose, Phil Simmons (will be back as head coach in 2021) and Vivian Richards.
