It all came down to Winnipeg Hawks vs Andre Russell in the Final of 2019 Global T20 Canada. While Russell bludgeoned his way to tie the scores at the end of the stipulated 20 overs for defending Champions Vancouver Knights, Winnipeg managed to tie him down in the Super Over to lift the 2019 edition of the T20 league.
Winnipeg Hawks eventual total of 192/8 was built on the back of UAE’s Shaiman Anwar’s brilliant knock of 90 runs, and he was supported in a 73-runs opening wicket partnership with Chris Lynn (37 off 21) and a 81-runs partnership for the 3rd wicket with JP Duminy (33 off 27). Hawks would have had more in the kitty but for Andre Russell’s spell of 4/29, which pegged them heavily in the later part of their innings, coupled with good spells from USA’s Ali Khan (2/30) and Canada’s Rayyan Khan Pathan (2/34).
Vancouver were in all spots of bother at 53/4 in the 8th over of their chase, but for a masterful knock by Shoaib Malik (64 off 36) and the late onslaught by Andre Russell (46 n.o off 20) and Canada’s Saad bin Zafar (27 off 26), which took them from nowhere to the brink of victory. Russell came in the 17th over when Malik got out and took majority of the strike as he plundered the Winnipeg bowlers without any mercy and brought down the equation to 17 runs off the final over. But with 3 runs needed off the last ball, Russell was only able to get two runs, with Zafar getting run out while going for the match-winning run. What eventually saved Winnipeg were the two dot’s on the 4th & 5th deliveries of the 20th over bowled by Canada’s Kaleem Sana, which brought the equation to 3 off the final delivery.
Vancouver batted first in the deciding Super Over, but Russell and Co only managed 9 runs, which Winnipeg chased down in the first four balls of the over to win their maiden GT20 Canada title. Shaiman Anwar was adjudged the man-of-the-match, while JP Duminy was adjudged the player-of-the-tournament.
Amidst all the controversies during the course of the tournament, the silver lining would be the amount of exposure provided to the Associate member nation players in the 2nd edition of the league, with as many as 6 players included per playing XI by the franchises in the matches.
