The cricket boards of Hong Kong, South Korea, China and Japan have signed a collective memorandum of understanding (MOU) with regards to hold the Women’s East Asia Cup tournament on an annual basis for the next four years period.
In a move to strengthen the profile of Women’s cricket in the respective countries, this is the first time the Women’s event agreement has taken place separately than the Men’s event. Hong Kong is due to host the 2021 event, with Japan granted the 2022 tournament before China and South Korea hold the 2023 and 2024 editions respectively.
Three editions of the Women’s East Asia Cup has taken place so far, with China Women winning the 2015 and 2019 editions, while Hong Kong Women won the 2017 edition. With T20I team ranking points on offer, the tournament will be crucial for all the participating countries in order to improve their standings in the ICC team rankings table.
The boards are also discussing similar plans for the Men’s East Asia Cup tournament, and a decision will be announced in due course of time.
