Cricket Fiji announced Men’s and Women’s squads for International series in 2022

Cricket Fiji (CF) have announced the core group of twenty (20) players for both Men’s and Women’s cricket teams for the 2022 season after the conclusion of the national trials held at Albert Park ground on 22nd June. Both Men’s and Women’s teams will be participating in International tournaments scheduled to take place in the final quarter of this year.

The Men’s team are scheduled to travel to Vanuatu in September 2022 to take part in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific (EAP) sub-regional qualifier, where they will compete along with Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Samoa from September 09th -15th. The winners of the sub-regional qualifier will advance to the EAP Finals, where Philippines are already placed after their exit from 2022 Global Qualifier A tournament held in Oman in February 2022. The other Associate member in the region, Papua New Guinea, are scheduled to take part in 2022 Global Qualifier B in Zimbabwe in July 2022 and in a scenario where PNG do not qualify for the T20 World Cup in Australia, they will also be featuring in the EAP Finals for the next edition of the T20 World Cup.

The Women’s team are also scheduled to travel to Vanuatu in October 2022 to take part in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Pacific Cup. This is a major initiative to grow the sport for Women in the region, as apart from ICC qualification pathway events and Pacific Games, there hasn’t been any other specific multi-nation event hosted in the region since uniform WT20I status was granted for all members. Players chosen for national trials for both Men’s and Women’s were both based on performances achieved during the domestic tournaments (Easter Cup and Association Cup events for Men’s and inaugural National Cricket Tournament for Women’s) held during the months of April and May. The Men’s squad players further got to play another domestic event in June during the India-Fiji T20 cricket tournament.
