Kenya Women’s cricket team defended their title by winning the 2018 “Kwibuka Cricket for Peace” T20 tournament in Kigali, Rwanda by defeating Uganda U19 in the final. After Kenya won both their final group matches against host’s Rwanda and Uganda U19 each on 09th Jun 2018, Uganda U19 qualified for the final on the basis of better net run-rate over Rwanda Women’s team.
Kenya Women thus remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. In the final, Kenya Women posted a total of 137/5 in their 20 overs and restricted Uganda U19 Women’s team to only 98/6 to win the match by 39 runs.
Veronica Anyango top-scored for Kenya in the final with 52 runs to her name along with handy cameo’s by Margaret Banja (25 n.o) and Silvia Kinyua (22). Jane Francis Baluka (1/28) and Rita Musamali (0/18 off 4) bowled well for Uganda U19 Women’s team.
Venasa Ooko (2/16 off 4), Sarah Bhakita (2/10 off 4) and Mary Mwangi (1/17 off 4) combined well together to restrict the run-scoring for Uganda Women’s batters as they struggled to get going throughout their innings to mount any kind of challenge over their opponents. Stephanie Nampiima played a lone hand in the end with 27 unbeaten runs but could not get the acceleration from the other end as Uganda U19 failed to play catch up with the asking rate.
Rwanda has hosted two International series within the space of few weeks with the Men’s team hosting Zambia for a 5-match T20 series followed by the Women’s “Kwibuka Cricket for Peace” T20 tournament to showcase their hosting capabilities ahead of ICC World T20 Africa “B” qualifiers in Jul 2018, the schedule for which can be found here.
