The tournament will feature the regular four (4) teams, namely the Black Bass, the Cassowaries, the Mariners, and the Mudmen, in a single round-robin group stage format, followed by the Final between the top two (2) teams, while the 3rd/4th play-off game will also take place. This will be the first domestic Men’s competition for the season, and the National set-up members will be looking forward to getting back into the action in the field after months of off-field issues and matters within the players and the cricket board.

PNG Men’s team will be preparing themselves for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia-EAP combined Qualifier in Oman in October 2025, and the tournament also provides insight to the newly appointed Head Coach for the Barramundis, Tim Nielsen.

The ground has previously hosted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific regional finals in 2019, that saw PNG compete against Vanuatu and Philippines. The CWC League 2 pathway program will see 126 ODI’s played across 21 set of Tri-series, with the first series kicking off in Scotland on 14 August 2019 in Aberdeen. Each Tri-series will see teams play a total of six ODI’s, with teams competing for the top three spots of the League 2 table which will confirm their direct entry in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2022.

PNG Barramundis have had a dismal performance in the CWC League 2 competition so far, winning only a solitary game from their twenty (20) completed matches in the competition, while Namibia, UAE, Nepal and USA are currently positioned in the mid-field battle for the final direct qualification entry into the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in 2023, with Oman and Scotland comfortably placed at the top 2 spots in the points table. CPNG are also scheduled to host Men’s teams from Nepal and UAE in their second home ODI series in the League 2 competition, for which the schedule is not yet announced.

The T20 tournament follows after the conclusion of the 50-overs Isuzu National Cup competition, which marked the resumption of domestic cricket in Papua New Guinea.

Cricket PNG CEO Greg Campbell said at the opening day of the tournament “The men are quickly back into 20 over cricket after a quick break from the 50 over National Cup. It’s a shame we won’t be going to Australia in a month’s time for the T20 World Cup, but there is still an opportunity for someone to put their hand up in this tournament for the 2021 World Cup squad as we build to the T20 World Cup in India.”

The T20 Smash competition sees four teams competing for the trophy, namely Hastings Deering Black Bass, Toyota Cassowaries, ODG Electrical Mariners and TrakPro MudMen. All the teams played each other twice in a double round-robin group stage format, at the conclusion of which, the Toyota Cassowaries have finished on top of the points table and had to rely on a better run-rate to edge past Hastings Deering Black Bass and TrackPro MudMen, as all the three teams finished on same points after registering four wins from their six group stage matches.

The Finals day on Sep 11th will see Hastings Deering Black Bass and TrackPro MudMen play each other in the play-off game in the morning for a berth in the Grand Final against the Toyota Cassowaries. The group stage matches saw impressive performances from the Barramundis national squad members like Kipling Doriga, Assad Vala, Charles Amini Jr, Sese Bau, Lega Siaka, Norman Vanua, Nosaina Pokana and Hiri Hiri, while the competition also saw notable performances from players in the domestic circuit like Savaki Gebai, Daurie Lohia, Kabua Vagi Morea, Eddie Alewa, Raho Sam and others.

PNG Barramundis national captain Assad Vala registered the only century scored in the T20 smash competition, while Nosaina Pokana being the sole bowler to have taken a 5-wicket haul in an innings.

The competition has provided head coach Joe Dawes the opportunity to look at the bench-strength for the Barramundis and mark out few players, who he would like to see playing for the national squad in the next 12-months build-up to the World Cup. Dawes said on the prospects of the Finals day “The Cassowaries hold a slight advantage, but anyone can win on Friday afternoon”.

PNG won 3 of their 4 completed games against Vanuatu and Philippines to finish on top of the points table followed by Philippines, who finished 2nd after winning their first ever T20I in the morning game on the final day of action from Amini Park in Port Moresby.

The final day of group stage matches saw both the morning and afternoon games played out in shortened overs, with the match between Philippines and Vanuatu reduced to 5-over-a-side game, while the afternoon match between Vanuatu and PNG reduced to 13-overs-a-side game.

Tony Ura finished as the tournament top-scorer with 243 runs from 4 matches including his maiden T20I century (107 n.o), coming against Philippines. Vanuatu’s Nalin Nipiko scored 2 half-centuries with a tally of 124 runs to his name from 4 matches. Lega Siaka finished as the tournament top wicket-taker with 7 wickets to his name from 4 matches, followed by Nalin Nipiko with 5 wickets from 4 matches.

Nalin Nipiko was adjudged as the player of the tournament for the qualifiers.

PNG got to test out both their batting and bowling departments in the two games as the first match saw the batters put up an impressive 200+ total against Philippines, before the bowlers restricted them to below 100 to clinch a big margin victory. In the afternoon game, the bowlers did well to restrict Vanuatu to a sub-par 120+ total, which the batsmen chased down with ease, losing only 2 wickets in the process to set-up a 8-wicket win.

Tony Ura, Assad Vala, Charles Amini Jr and Lega Siaka put in good effort on the field in both the matches. PNG even tried out Norman Vanua as an opener along with Tony Ura, a move that was much of a surprise. Nalin Nipiko became the first player from Vanuatu to score an official T20I half-century as well on the opening day of action.

Both Vanuatu and Philippines have an uphill task ahead of them to catch-up with PNG on both points and net run-rate to have any possibility to advance from the regional finals into the global qualifiers (only the top spot will advance from the 3-team event).

Four teams will take part in the competition captained by Assad Vala (Mariners), Charles Amini Jnr (Black Bass), Norman Vanua (Mudmen) and Tony Ura (Cassowaries). Eight members of PNG U19 Garramuts squad will also feature in the tournament.

All teams will play six group phase matches, after which the top two teams at the top of the points standings will compete in the Final on 05th Aug, 2018. The Barramundis squad will be chosen after the completion of the tournament.

The HEBOU Shield has been contested previously in 50-overs format and even in the 3-day format; however it gets played in the T20 format in 2018.
