Cricket Scotland were originally awarded the hosting rights for the European region qualifiers towards qualification pathway for 2022 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in West Indies, but the event has now been relocated to Spain, as Desert Springs club facility takes over the hosting duties from La Manga Club facility, and will host the tournament from September 19th – 25th, 2021.

Europe’s originally scheduled Division 2 event was cancelled following extensive consultation with participating Members, as the only available window for hosting did not provide a suitable environment for the staging of an international pathway event. Additionally, Denmark and Guernsey will not be able to participate due to a clash with the European school calendar during the scheduled period. Hence, U19 teams from Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands and Jersey are competing for the lone qualification spot from the region.

ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said on ICC website “Whilst it is disappointing that Denmark and Guernsey will not be able to participate in the U19 Regional Qualifier, we are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved to enable these events to be rescheduled and give us the best possible chance of restarting ICC pathway events in Europe.”

The decision to move the events to Spain was taken after a period of consultation with the participating countries and relevant governments, where it was determined that it was the best possible chance for the events to take place due to COVID-19 restrictions in Scotland. ICC has already cancelled the regional qualifiers of Asia, Americas and East Asia-Pacific region, with only the Africa event still scheduled to take place along with Europe.
