Chilia stars as Vanuatu lose thriller against Singapore Stars

A thrilling contest between Vanuatu national squad and Singapore Stars team played at Johor Ground in Malaysia was marred by rain interruptions at first and got decided by D/L method later as Vanuatu went down by 13 runs.

Singapore Stars were bowled out for only 147 inside 41 overs with Jelany Chilia (3/16 off 10) & Williamsing Nalisa (4/54 off 10) starring with the ball for the men from the Pacific Islands. Calum Blake (1/4) and Andrew Mansale (1/6) also bowled few good tight overs.

Vidyut Kadiresan (28 off 55), Chetan Suryavanshi (26 off 24) and Anantha Krishna (23 off 32) were the only notable contributions in the batting line-up for Singapore Stars.

Vanuatu had a torrid time in their innings as they got reduced to 67/7 in the 20th over. Vinoth Baskaran (3/27) and Dharmichand Mulewa (3/38) ran havoc into the batting line-up with only Jono Dunn and Trevor Langa crossing into the double digits scoreline. Head Coach-cum-player Shane Deitz had a sorry outing himself as he got run out after scoring 6 runs.

It was again down to Jelany Chilia, who provided the late-order burst scoring 45 unbeaten runs off 52 deliveries and Vanuatu reached 101/7 in the 29th over when the match got over due to the weather conditions with Vanuatu falling short by 13 runs as per Duckworth-Lewis method.

The first match between the two sides was washed out on 21st Apr, with Vanuatu holding the edge over Singapore Stars when the rain came down and the match was abandoned. Vanuatu had got bowled out for 202 in the 45th over and had Singapore Stars struggling at 58/3 in the 11th over. Josh Rasu (90) and Patrick Matautaava (56) were among the runs for the visitors.

The matches have provided Andrew Mansale and Shane Deitz a look into their squad members and narrow down their best possible XI before they hit the straps in a few days as ICC WCL Division 4 begins in Malaysia.
