Sandri takes over from Dawes to deliver PNG’s World Cup dream

Cricket Papua New Guinea (CPNG) have announced the appointment of Carl Sandri as the head coach for the PNG national squads and also the high-performance director. The appointment followed last week’s media announcement that Joe Dawes will be vacating the post after being at the helm for the past 3 years.

CPNG CEO, Mr Greg Campbell stated in the official press release “we are delighted to welcome Carl Sandri to Cricket PNG as our new National Coach and High Performance manager. We have been through an extensive search and we must thank his predecessor Joe Dawes for his help in this process to find a suitable replacement.”

“Carl has an extensive professional coaching resume across men’s, womens, junior representative cricket and high performance. This includes roles within Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria, BBL and with Italy in associate cricket where he also represented as a player. He has coached and played all over the world providing him with an indepth knowledge of what is required to be successful as an ICC associate member.”

PNG Men’s national squad have a big year ahead, even after the postponement of two League 2 series scheduled to take place at Port Moresby, but have the T20 World Cup to take part in during October/November 2021 in India.

PNG Women’s national squad are scheduled to take part in Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in July 2021 in Sri Lanka and Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Japan later this year. The U19 squad will also be heading to Japan to take part in the EAP (East Asia-Pacific) qualifiers for 2022 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in West Indies.

Sandri has been unable to travel to Port Moresby owing to travel clearance issues, but will be there soon to take over the proceedings and start the preparations with domestic T20 competitions for both men’s and women’s players.
