Nissan hope for better fortunes in Formula E World Championship than in Endurance Racing

Nissan will make a return to top-level motorsports racing after their disastrous LMP1 program in World Endurance Championship in 2015, as they are set to take over from Renault in Formula E World Championship in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s brand, which runs the team program in the Formula E racing.

Michael Carcamo, head of Nissan’s motorsports arm Nismo, is confident of team’s success in Formula E as he feels that the Brand’s expertise in developing electric cars since 2010 will help them ease into the day-to-day operations for a Formula E team. Carcamo also feels that the new regulation from 2018-2019 to use a single car over the entire duration of the race will serve as an advantage for Nissan.

“We just launched the second-gen Leaf (Nissan’s electric road car), we’ve been doing research and development on electric vehicles for quite a number of years,” he said.

Nissan will however, use Renault’s powertrain for its debut in the 2018-2019 season. For the 2019-2020 season, Nissan will be free to use its own powertrain and based on their first years experience, Nissan will definitely start developing the same during the 2018-2019 season itself, it is hoped.
